Accessing UpToDate

We are temporarily unable to access UpToDate free trial using the link on the trust portal page.  Until and after this is fixed you can access the system using your Athens login. Go to and browse down. On the right of the page you will see the Athens login prompt.
If you do not have an Athens account go to to register. Registering from a trust PC will get you registered quicker. For more information about Athens go to

Academy Library Christmas Opening Hours

November 30, 2012

The library will be closed from the 24th to the 26th of December.  We will be open the 27th of December 9am to 1pm.  We will then be closed from the 28th of December to the 1st of January 2013.

The library will open again on the 2nd of January 2013 9am to 5pm.

New library managament system at the Academy Library

Critical Appraisal training

The Academy Library is running a Critical Appraisal session 12th October at 1:30 – 3:30 in CSU 1, first floor ERC Building.  All staff are welcome.

The session will provide an introduction to critical appraisal and how to make sense of systematic reviews. There will also be an opportunity to critically appraise a paper.

Academy Library is offering a series of four 30 to 40 minute library training sessions covering all aspects of using the library and searching for healthcare information. The completion of all three sessions can count towards personal and Professional development.
Session 2: “Applying for Inter-Library Loans” will be held at the library the 10th of October at 12pm and the 11th of October at 3pm.

Oxford Specialist Handbooks ebooks added to library catalogue

We are pleased to announce that we have added over sixty Oxford Specialist Handbooks to our ebook collection.  Titles include Addiction Medicine, Fetal Cardiology, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Surgical Oncology and many more. Simply go to the UHSM Academy Library ebooks collection from our webpage.  You will need your Athens login to access the collection. Speak to a member of staff for more information.

Literature Search Training Skills session

We will be running a Literature Search Training Skills session on September 21st 1:30 – 3:30.  All staff are welcome.

Book/Resource Lists

We have created a number of subject book lists on our website to help you find what you want.  Some of the subjects on the list were created as a result of requests from our users.  These include: Autonomous Practice in Emergency Care, Books to Inspire, Burns Course, Medical DVDs, Cancer, Fiction, Mentorship, Leadership and Management as well as others. We have iPads!

An iPad in a clinical setting provides instant mobile access to current information. The iPad will make it easy to collaborate with colleagues remotely and access important information wherever your work takes you without having to look for a workstation. Check drug interactions, medical images, access medical databases, access ebooks and ejournals (Athens password required), show patients illustrations/pictures and information, use online training packages. Carrying an iPad gives you the Internet and its wealth of resources and information at your fingertips.
